Tighten, tone, and don’t get too big

Me- sitting down across from a new client:

SDA: How do I make this a 5 star experience?

Client:

  • I want to tighten

  • I want to tone

  • I don’t want to get too big.

Everyone wants to get fitter.

No one wants to buy a new wardrobe.

We hear ya.

And we have some good news.

You won’t get too big. We promise.

It doesn’t happen that easily

Getting bigger; bigger to the point that you need to tailor your clothes; bigger to the point your friends call you ‘Ahnuld’ behind your back; bigger to the point they’ll “randomly” drug test you at work; doesn’t happen by accident. You’re going to need a few things, and since this is a short form blog we’ll dial in on one.

One specific thing you NEED to do to gain size.

One specific thing

You’re going to need to eat a lot of protein. Protein is amino acids, the building blocks of muscle. “Experts differ on what the exact amount of protein you need to build muscle, but the general consensus is that if your goal is muscle gain you should consume 1 gram of protein for every pound of your target body weight.

So if you want to weigh a muscle-stacked 185, that's 185 grams of protein daily.”

What’s a good source of protein?

Let’s go with steak.

It’s been a minute since I measured something in grams (break out the triple beam) but according to some An 8 oz steak has 45-50 grams of steak. If you want to weigh 125 (size of a petite woman) you’re going to have to eat the equivalent of 1.5 lbs of steak everyday.

That ain’t happenin’ by accident.

If we switch protein sources to chicken we’re getting roughly 70 g of protein in an 8 oz serving. That means a little under a lb of chicken, or 2 average sized chicken breasts from the supermarket.

You won’t lift weights with your trainer twice a week and suddenly rip through your favorite jeans, or hulk out like Lou Ferrigno. That kind of big requires a big change in lifestyle and eating a certain way is part of that.

So lift away.

You will change. Your clothes won't fit the same, but you’re gonna love it.

Your weight may rise but you’ll look more svelte.

You won’t hear the ‘Ahnuld’ whispers, or take the drug tests; Instead you’ll find out that unlike certain other body parts, it is safe for people to compliment your physique.

‘Look at those guns.’

‘Looking great; how often do you work out?’

‘Who is your steroid dealer?’

No Dealer. I work out at Train twice a week.
