Resolution 2024

‘You must get so busy around the new year.’ - Everyone

The Holidays over, the resolutions are fresh, the gyms are packed and the Trainers… business is a little slow. It runs contrary to the prevailing sentiment that our business doesn’t pick up, but never once in 20 years have I seen an uptick in business on January 2nd. Never.

Usually biz is a little off as clients wrap up the Holidays and get back into the swing of things. The Resolutionaries never commit to training. I can’t speak for them, but ‘If I go on my own for a few months then I’ll hire a trainer,’ sounds like a likely bargain.

Make your resolution a reality.

One simple resolution

40% of Americans will set a New Year’s resolution; Last year’s most common resolutions per Forbes magazine.

“Failing at New Year’s resolutions is so common that there’s even a slew of (unofficial) dates commemorating such failures—some sources cite “Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day” as January 17 while others denote the second Friday in January as “Quitter’s Day… the average resolution lasts just 3.74 months.

Resolutions clearly don’t work. We’re going to set one anyway!

Just one resolution

The top 5 resolutions are redundant. Improving diet and losing weight- same sh*t, different flies.

They’re too general. Improve mental health? How? I see a wish, not a plan.

And there are too many. Making more than one significant change is like herding cats. There’s an old saying ‘never half ass two things. Whole ass one thing.’

Let’s trim it down. One resolution.

My resolution

My one resolution is to sleep better. Sleep is HUGELY important to health. Great sleep:

  • maintains your weight

  • increases energy level (makes me better at work (finances) and working out (fitness))

  • improves immune function

  • relieves stress

  • improves mood and…

  • increases heart health.

I just checked like 4 of the 5 most common resolutions… in my sleep.

To sleep better I:

  • Set a bed time.

  • Set a wake up time.

  • Put down devices :30 minutes before bed time.

  • Set an intention before sleep.

That last one might be the most powerful. We spend 1/3 of our lives asleep, and sleep is ‘the natural door to our subconscious.’ I read over and over about how ‘the conscious and unconscious minds are joined’ in sleep. ‘Whatever you have in consciousness as you go to sleep is… [expressed] in the waking 2/3 of your life.’

Translated into plain English: We marinate (subconsciously) on whatever is in our minds for plus/minus 8 hours during sleep. We can ruminate on what went wrong or what we’re afraid of; or we can problem solve and aspire; Thoughts become things. Whatever thoughts your mind continually waters will be the same thoughts that grow during waking hours.

Happy Holidays everyone. 2023 was an amazing year for Train. 2024 will be even better.

Go get some rest.
